The Stories Behind My Tools: 34 Years of Palette Knives

Behind every painting is a collection of silent studio partners—the tools that bring abstract textures, bold strokes, and fine details to life. For me, those tools are my palette knives. Over the past 34 years, I have built a collection that tells the story of my journey as an artist.

A Collection Decades in the Making

Thirty-four years ago, I acquired my very first palette knives. What started as a modest set grew into a personal history of my creative evolution. Today, my studio holds knives of virtually every shape, size, and flexibility imaginable:

Trowel shapes for scraping and broad color application.

Long, flexible blades for sweeping gestures and fluid movement.

Pointed diamond tips for delicate lines, sharp accents, and fine details.

Flat, rigid blades for building up heavy impasto and sculptural depth.

 

Adapting to the Medium: Oil vs. Acrylic

Different mediums demand different handling, and my palette knives reflect that rhythm:

Oil Painting: Oil paint moves like buttery cream. It holds its body and dries slowly, allowing flexible, springy knives to glide across the canvas, blending subtle tonal shifts and layering rich texture seamlessly.

Acrylic Painting: Fast-drying acrylics require a decisive, quick touch. I turn to sturdier, precise blades to lay down vibrant, crisp layers before the paint sets, building dynamic dimension without blending too early.

The Select Few: My Everyday Favorites

Although my studio drawers and cap holders are filled with dozens of options from over three decades of collecting, I inevitably reach for the same select few day after day. 

These favorite knives feel like natural extensions of my hands. Their handles are worn, coated in dried layers of old paint, and perfectly balanced. They carry memories of past studio triumphs, long hours of experimentation, and hundreds of finished canvases.

While every knife in my collection has played a role in my artistic path, it’s those few reliable favorites that continue to shape the landscapes, abstracts, and textures on my easel today.
