Applied entirely with a palette knife, the paint moves across the canvas in decisive planes of colour: the pale limestone of old buildings, the deep Mediterranean blue pressing in from the sides, the shimmering suggestion of water and sky. At this small scale — 8 × 10 inches — every mark carries weight.
