Familiar landscapes often reveal their boldest colors only after repeated visits. Having traveled to Chillon Castle a few times, this piece represents a shift from observing its historic architecture to capturing the emotional resonance and majestic energy of the site.
In this expressive rendition of the iconic Swiss fortress, I relied on heavy, sculptural impasto to build the rugged forms of the stone walls and the surrounding alpine peaks. Rather than a traditional, literal palette, I used striking temperature contrasts to bring the scene to life. The castle itself glows in warm, sunlit oranges and golds, standing out boldly against the deep, rhythmic blues and lilacs of the mountains. A fiery red underpainting threads its way through the composition—outlining the peaks, framing the clouds, and dancing across the water's reflection—giving the entire landscape a vibrant, beating heart.
This painting is less about the physical masonry of the castle and more about the vivid, lasting impression it leaves behind.
